OUT OF PATIENTS

PODCAST

WITH MATTHEW ZACHARY

The longest-running, highest-reach independent healthcare podcast, ranking in the top “1.5 percent globally”*

THE SHOW YOU LOVE ABOUT THE HEALTHCARE YOU HATE

Since 2007, Matthew’s been calling out the hypocrisy, hubris, and coercive shenanigans baked into American healthcare—with a mic in one hand and a middle finger in the other. What started as a pirate radio rebellion is now the most trusted, notorious, and unfiltered show in the game. Patients love it. Industry listens. And anyone who’s ever been gaslit by the system knows exactly where to turn to nod their heads in shared rage.

Every episode delivers unsanitized stories, dark humor, policy takedowns, and good old fashioned 80s Gen X pop culture angst, told by the people living it, not spinning it.

BEYOND
OUT OF PATIENTS

In addition to his flagship podcast, Matthew Zachary has built an expansive body of audio and documentary work spanning nearly two decades. From early independent broadcasts—before “podcast” was a word—to nationally distributed series, his projects have explored cancer, survivorship, policy, culture, and the lived experience of patients with depth and candor. The selections below represent a snapshot of that broader catalog and reflect the evolution of a media platform that grew in ambition, scale, and reach over time.

The Cancer Mavericks

Before hashtags, wristbands, or bell-ringing ceremonies, cancer survivors were left with nothing—no plan, no path, no voice. So they built one from scratch. The Cancer Mavericks is the untold story of the rebels, misfits, and outsiders who refused to accept the status quo. Over the last 50 years, they turned personal trauma into public action—and sparked a movement that forced the system to care. It’s not a history lesson. It’s a reckoning. Hosted by award-winning advocate and producer Matthew Zachary, The Cancer Mavericks pulls back the curtain on the people who made survivorship matter—before anyone even said the word.

Walk It Off: Men Don’t Talk About Cancer

Walk It Off is a no-BS, three-episode series for men facing cancer who are tired of going through it alone. No sugarcoating. No soft-focus inspiration. Just real conversations about what it means to be a man with cancer in a world that still expects silence, toughness, and zero emotion. Men delay care, avoid support, and suffer quietly because they’ve been told vulnerability is weakness. This series pushes back. Patients, survivors, and experts talk honestly about stigma, mental health, fatherhood, masculinity, and finding real community. Today, more than ever, more men are speaking up. More are connecting. But this conversation is far from over.

The Stupid Cancer Show

From 2007 to 2018, across more than 400 episodes, The Stupid Cancer Show became the first national radio platform dedicated to young adult cancer. Long before healthcare podcasts flooded the market, it gave patients, advocates, policymakers, and clinicians a live microphone and refused to sanitize the conversation. Politics, insurance, research, civil rights, media, culture, nothing sat off limits. What began as pirate radio for a forgotten demographic grew into a movement that shattered isolation and built the largest young adult cancer community in the country. The show did not follow the advocacy playbook. It rewrote it from scratch.
