American Spends Six Hours Proving He’s American Enough For American Healthcare
My friend Matt Holt founded The Health Care Blog. Knows more about our broken system than anyone. And even he couldn’t navigate his own insurance cancellation.
After 4 years on the same plan, Covered California decided he wasn’t a citizen. While trying to figure out if his cardiologist was covered for his heart condition.
The fix? Upload his passport to three different websites, spend hours in chat queues, call Marin County during the two hours on Tuesday when they actually answer phones, and register for BenefitsCal—a website no one told him existed.
Blue Shield’s website said he was covered. Blue Shield’s phone rep said he wasn’t. One Medical said “it’s totally random with them.”
They asked permission to change his 11-year-old’s doctor. From him. Then from the kid. Then not at all. Depends who answers the phone that day.
Matt’s a healthcare expert with infinite time (says me) to untangle this mess. What about the single mom with two jobs? The cancer patient on chemo? The immigrant navigating this in their second language?
He had to prove he was American enough for American healthcare. The system that already bankrupts Americans wanted to make sure he was really one of them first.
This is the guy who FOUNDED The Health Care Blog. If he can’t navigate this system, what chance do the rest of us have?
Your insurance isn’t insurance. It’s a subscription to bureaucratic torture with a chance of medical care.
Drop your insurance nightmare below. Let’s document how broken this really is.
Are you new here? My condolences and my thanks. Follow along and stay loud with the rest of us. More voices means more pressure on a system that counts on silence
