Don't Start A Podcast (with Matt and Andrew)

On the show today, Matt and Andrew give you their professional advice: DON'T START A PODCAST! Just don’t. Yeah, we might make it look easy. But trust us it takes a lot more than the gift of gab to build a successful audio brand. And Lord knows, the world doesn’t need another person blathering into a microphone. But if resistance is futile and you’ve got something really important to say, let OffScrip Media show you how it’s done. Because we know the biz. Just like Jeff Goldblum’s character in Jurassic Park, we’ll crunch the numbers for you, steer you away from monumental blunders, and shower you with witty repartee along the way. Just like we do in this episode.

Dr. Rafael Fonseca Is The Hero We Need

On the show today: Dr. Rafael Fonseca is a professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic who focuses on Multiple Myeloma with a sidebar hobby dabbling in Ethics Health Economics. Fun fact of the day, he's a Google Scholar, has his own Wikipedia page, courtesy of a birthday gift from his son, and — as a self-proclaimed pathological optimist — hopes to spread empathy throughout the medical community while protecting the rights of patients, so they can make the best decisions for themselves and no one else. Bonus points for him being a hysterically refreshing voice on Twitter. Enjoy the show.

Stupid Cancer: You Know What It Is

On the show today, I'm so thrilled to welcome here live in-studio Alison Silberman, CEO at Stupid Cancer (my old job, as you may know), and Shannon Wyant, a fellow AYA cancer survivor and sitting member of the Stupid Cancer Board of Directors (also my old job as you may know.) The best conversations are those without an agenda that manifest from their own chemistry and organic magic. And what you're about to hear is no exception. So prepare your Wayback machine and your magic eight ball for a "wikipedic" throwback to how the sausage was — and continues to be made — for the largest young adult support community in the world. This one's for Annie Goodman, Jason Mlot, Chad Whitman, Ali Powers, Emily Morrison, Erica Paul, and Lauren Scott.

This Little Diagnostic Went To Market...

On the show today, I'm thrilled to welcome – LIVE IN STUDIO — Liz Cormier-May, CEO of Mammogen, and Marty Keiser, CEO at IV Bioholdings. It's hard to blend funny, entertaining wit with healthcare jargon like diagnostics, market access, go-to-market strategy, etc. And yet, somehow, we did it. The process is gnarly and ridiculous but, now more than ever, it's actually possible to NOT GET CANCER because of much more accessible and affordable diagnostics. Some of them are free; some are even over the counter. But getting into the hands of doctors or retail consumers is a whole other story, let alone issues with the FDA and safety. Well, we cut through all that crap and get to the brass taxes of how the only real thing moving the needle are consumers who vote with their wallets.

How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall?

Today, LIVE here at OffScrip Media studios, I welcome my incomparably talented friend Rebecca Cherry. She and I met almost 20 years ago. We hit it off as members of a niche-within-a-niche club, that being young adult cancer survivor professional musician/composers. And when I say incomparably talented, I mean incomparably talented: Rebecca is a singer, songwriter, model, entrepreneur, and internationally-acclaimed violinist who has performed and recorded with the likes of Adele, Beyonce, Common, Jay Z, and the Jonas Brothers with appearances on Letterman, Conan, Fallon, the MTV Music Awards, and The Grammys. How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Be Rebecca Cherry, because she's performed there, too. And if that's not enough, she's a single mom raising a beautiful daughter named Ara. What's she's chosen to do with the life she has been given is not only inspirational but the very embodiment of what it means to get busy living. Enjoy the show.

Not Your Father's Pharma Conference

On the show today, it's a spotlight on NAMAPA (National Association of Medication Access & Patient Advocacy) with Co-Founders Elizabeth Johnson LPN and Melissa Paige, CPhT. Liz started her career in immunology and moved into the world of "medication access," which is healthcare between the patient and the doctor, where issues of access, pricing, prescriptions, and navigating the complexities of the system are all managed on behalf of the patient. As a certified Pharmacy Tech, Melissa lives in a world of reimbursement and access challenges in her previous roles, which is also code for "how medicine gets to the patient." NAMAPA is the presenting sponsor of the inaugural Healthcare Advocate Summit for Advocates by Advocates held on September 8-10 in Galveston Island, Texas. This conference is slated to be the premier event for anyone involved in patient access, navigation, and reimbursement. Learn more at https://www.healthcareadvocatesummit.com.

The Cancer Mavericks EP2: The Alumni Association

By the 1980s, cancer was no longer a death sentence. But the question of what surviving actually meant was unanswered. Cancer survivors had to navigate issues around employment, relationships, and the emotional and physical side effects of treatment in a world that largely didn’t know what to do with them. (and they were still called “victims.”) In 1985, a young doctor named Fitzhugh Mullan wrote an essay called “Seasons of Survival” about his own experience with cancer. His piece helped popularize the term “cancer survivor” and resonated with a growing number of survivors, who were starting to form support groups around the country. Among them was Catherine Logan Carrillo, the founder of People Living Through Cancer in New Mexico, who asked Fitzhugh to help her convene an “alumni association” for cancer survivors. And they did, during one monumental weekend in Albuquerque. For more information about this series, visit https://canvermavericks.com

1990s Cancer: AOL or Bust with Steve Friedman

On the show today, my brother from another mother — Steve Friedman, is the Senior Advisor of Operations for SEER at the National Cancer Institute. (We'll get into all the acronyms later in the show because I know you're looking forward to that.) Steve was diagnosed back in the 1990s with testicular cancer while in his 20s – so brings with him a profound perspective of progress, not just for young adult cancer, but for cancer policy, research, and institutional growth at the Federal level. While all those free AOL CDs back then drove us crazy, Steve put them to good use and found a community of his peers using what we decided to call "dial-up support." His storied career as a public servant, nonprofit leader, and cancer advocate isn't just inspiring; it's a perfect example of how we can make the most of the time that has been given to us. Enjoy the show.

Brock Yetso and The Ulman Foundation

Brock Yetso is the President & CEO at the Ulman Foundation, one of the original young adult cancer advocacy organizations. Borne in the late 1990s, the Ulman Foundation (formerly the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults) pioneered the very idea of adolescent and young adult cancer as a thing, first and foremost, long before the data and the research manifested in practice. I consider Brock a progenitor and mentor who helped me find my place and my voice before Stupid Cancer was a real boy.

Thanks to groups like the Ulman Foundation, 25 years later, young adult cancer is now mainstream oncology — but there's still no short supply of new cancer diagnoses each year, which is why their work continues to this day. Enjoy the show.

Introducing: The Cancer Mavericks

Most people don’t know that you’re considered a cancer survivor at the moment of diagnosis. It wasn’t always this way. Sixty years ago, a cancer diagnosis was a death sentence. And if you did survive, you were left to figure out the rest of your life on your own.

But some survivors demanded something different, something better.

From OffScrip Media, this is The Cancer Mavericks, a deep-dive narrative into the people who fought for better treatment, forced doctors to listen, and pushed America to see the human side of the disease.

Episodes of this series will publish monthly through the end of December 2021 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the National Cancer Act of 1971. For more information, visit https://cancermavericks.com.
