78%
78% of Americans want Congress to extend the ACA tax credits set to expire. That number should end the debate. 78%! The public doesn’t want a healthcare collapse so politicians can posture for the cameras.
The system created this mess. Those tax credits lowered premiums for 24M people buying insurance through the ACA marketplace. Take them away and premiums more than double. 4M lose coverage overnight. The same lawmakers who cheer fiscal responsibility wrote the law that built this trap. They love to call it reform. I call it cruelty with better branding.
Most people don’t even know it’s coming. How could they? We’re too busy deciding who to be angry at during the Super Bowl.
60% of those with self purchased insurance have no clue the credits expire soon. They will find out when the bill arrives and the numbers don’t add up.
We know who holds the power and the pen. They can fix this. Instead they cling to purity tests while families wonder how to pay for chemotherapy. They will blame Biden. They will blame the budget. They will blame illegal aliens.
But voters already know who’s holding the matches.
Democrats deserve PLENTY of heat too. (Lewis Black’s famous two-party system: A party of bad ideas and a party of no ideas) If they can’t turn public outrage into policy, they fail the same people they claim to defend. But at least they are pushing to make these credits permanent and standing their ground.
Healthcare is not a luxury. It’s oxygen for the Main Street American voter, who just so happens to be a patient. This childish BS It’s about whether breathing counts as a privilege in America. Millions of people hang in the balance while elected officials rehearse their talking points for cable news while algorithms manipulate the masses.
