Are We Winning Yet?

The Senate tossed Trumpβs plan to gut NIH funding and called it a win.
Everyone cheered.
My first thought was, "Finally, something good happened!". Then I realized how twisted that reaction is. We celebrate because Congress decided not to burn the house down completely? SRSLY? Thatβs the bar now?
NIH money keeps every lab alive. It pays for breakthroughs corporations later patent and sell back to us at whatever price they want. Without it, cancer research, rare disease treatments, basic science, all of it stalls. And yet every year politicians act like this funding is a gift instead of the bare minimum a functioning country owes its people.
This βincreaseβ only feels like progress because weβve been starved for decades. Scientists leave the field. Patients pay twice for drugs their taxes already funded. Surviving isnβt victory. Crumbs arenβt reform.
Stop calling it a win until it actually is one.
